12 Online Chat Safety Tips Every Indian Should Know

Chat rooms are a great way to meet new people – as long as you protect yourself. These are the habits our moderators recommend to every new user.

Protect your personal information

  1. Use a nickname, not your real full name. A nickname like ChaiLover92 tells people enough about you. You can always share more once trust is built over time.
  2. Never share your phone number early. Your number is linked to your UPI, WhatsApp, bank and Aadhaar-linked services. Keep conversations inside the chat room until you are sure.
  3. Keep your address, workplace and college private. Even small details – the name of your society or the bus you take – can be combined to find you.
  4. Never share OTPs, passwords or card details. No genuine person or moderator will ever ask for them. Anyone who does is attempting fraud.

Spot common scams

  1. Money requests are a red flag. Stories about medical emergencies, stuck parcels, customs fees or "investment opportunities" are classic scams. Do not send money or scan any QR code.
  2. Be wary of anyone rushing you onto another app. Scammers prefer private apps where moderators cannot see them. Take your time.
  3. Avoid links from strangers. Fake "verification" pages, APK files and login pages can steal your accounts. If in doubt, don't click.
  4. Never share intimate photos or go on camera with strangers. Blackmail ("sextortion") gangs record and then threaten victims. If it happens, do not pay – block, save evidence and report it immediately.

Use the tools you have

  1. Ignore and move on. Type /ignore nickname and you will stop seeing that person's messages. See our chat commands cheat sheet for more.
  2. Tell a moderator. Moderators are marked in the user list. Message them with the nickname and what happened.
  3. Meeting offline? Be careful. Meet only in busy public places, tell a friend where you are going and arrange your own transport.
  4. Report cyber crime. In India you can file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in or call the national helpline 1930. In an emergency call 112.
